What are healthy fats and how can I lose weight without working out?

Today we are going to discuss some really simple and easy changes that you can make to your diet that will assist in weight loss and body composition as well as many other health benefits- all from adding fats to your diet…Yes Seriously!

But before you get to mad and head down to your local Macca’s followed by the Ice Cream shop I do need to make a few things clear.

Number one being that...

 “All fats are NOT created equal"

Most fats that we have in our diet are trans fats. Trans fats raise our risk of heart disease and they can also contribute to an increase in total cholesterol levels and a drop in the healthy HDL cholesterol. These man-made fats are much worse for you than any other natural fat.

They are found in most cooking oils (once heated, most processed foods,cookies,cakes, hotchips, crackers,..pretty much everything. . The cool thing is though that not all fats are bad!!

So what are some good fats and how do they help us lose fat?

Swap Cooking oil forCoconut Oil

My favourite addition to my current diet! You can use this in homemade chocolate, for cooking, in all raw desserts and many many more! So what is it about coconut oil that helps us lose weight? Coconut oil primarily consists of medium-chain fatty acids. These triglycerides can speed up the metabolism because they are so easily digested and converted into energy. Coconut Oil also helps protect the body from insulin resistance (prevent type 2 diabetes!!) Beats your sugar cravings and boosts your immunity.

Swap a big steak forSalmon

Salmon is one of natures super-foods as it is RICH in Omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3s are essential for proper brain function and health and can only be obtained from food sources. So how does receiving adequate levels of Omega ‘s help us lose weight? Well firstly high protein to help with body composition which will help your body build muscle and burn fat. Salmon also increases feelings of fullness and thus helping lower caloric intake. Salmon also helps us lower bad cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure. Added benefits are also healthy shiny hair, straight well formed teeth and strong nails, reduces inflammation and reduces risk of serious illness like heart disease.

Swap butter/margarine forAvocado

The fats in Avocado is heart healthy monounsaturated fat. The “good fat” or monounsaturated fat in avocados is also known to lower cholesterol. If left unchecked, high levels of cholesterol can lead to the production of hormones that cause the abdomen to store fat. Avocado also helps suppress the appetite. Avocados are also rich in potassium. Potassium helps to reduce body fat by preventing fluid retention. Potassium also helps you lose weight by converting food into energy and encouraging muscle growth.

So what are some other fats we can use that are really good for us? Cold olive oils, nuts like almonds, brazil and walnuts are also really good!

So there it is- a few simple ways to improve your health and lose weight without massive trips to the gym and sweating it out. Of course adding exercise is really important to your overall health and longevity of life plus you will get much faster results.
